In the early 19th century, Robert Shepley, a young Glossop man, purchased a parcel of land in Marple. On part of it he built Rhode Farm Mill for spinning cotton and the rest he let out as a farm. The mill became known locally as Shepley's Mill and is now an industrial estate.

The Robert S. Shepley we celebrated as the club's first Captain and President was Robert Shepley's grandson. He inherited the mill and farm including large areas of land in Marple, Hazel Grove and Torkington, along with considerable wealth.

The Industrial Revolution led to the creation of a wealthy class of people like R.S. Shepley who found themselves with leisure time for such pastimes as golf.

On the 13th August 1892, a group of men including Robert S. Shepley met and resolved that a golf club for Marple be formed.

Land to lay down a course together with a site for a clubhouse was required. A suitable location was found adjacent to Woodfield Farmhouse which itself became the clubhouse.

Over the years many changes too numerous

to mention have been made to the original

course and it is now well matured offering a

challenge to all who enjoy an excellent

parkland course with pleasant undulations.
